Dear Friends,
January is National Mentoring Month. As we look at the last several years, I think we can all agree, mentoring is more important than ever. I was trying to decide what to share in a month that highlights the power of mentoring, and then it hit me…the most powerful words about mentoring have already been shared…
“Because when I feel like I am not wanted and am feeling like I’m nothing I can talk to my mentor and just say what I have to say. I know if I need help with something they will help me.”
“She makes me feel good about myself. I can really open up to her about my feelings and what I am going through.”
“He makes me feel better about my life”
“He is like a really good friend. He’s been teaching me about being respectful to my teacher and being on task. He helps me understand and learn new things. He helps me get my anger out.”
“Thank you for helping me find my true talents.”
“It’s the most amazing feeling you could ever feel. Just having someone to talk to, it’s amazing . I can’t even begin to explain how much it has helped me. I really do hope you understand, even if it is just for an hour, it is a lot more than an hour to a kid. It’s their whole lives that are being changed by you. I want to thank you for doing what you are doing and helping all the kids you are helping.”
A school counselor shared:
“The student has blossomed so much this year. Her mentor has been a great example in helping her create other positive relationships. She has greatly improved in many areas-socially, academically, in her self-confidence, and with peers”
A mentor shared:
“It allows me to get outside myself once a week. It’s something I look forward to. It brings me joy and a smile to my face, knowing that I am making a small difference in a child’s life.”
