“Hello!” sing three little voices in unison.
“I don’t see her.”
“Is she home?”
“Maybe she’s sleeping”
Not easily deterred, the oldest calls again, “Hello!”, while the younger girls echo.
Setting my work aside, I go to the door and am inundated with three little girls telling me all about their week at the same time.
I go out and sit on the step while they expound on their adventures.
Sometimes they do skits. Other times they show games they’ve learned in school.
I don’t have to do a thing. Just be present and interested in what they are saying.
After about an hour they head back home for dinner and I return to my office.
Mentors, you do the same thing.
You show up, you listen, you are interested, you are a cheer leader, and you have fun.
That investment of time may seem trivial, but it’s important. You’re mentees look forward to seeing you and telling you about their week. They are watching for you to come.
And that one hour a week transforms lives.
Thank you for being there.
